Madam, - In your obituary column (October 11th) tribute was paid to the late Mildred O'Neill, wife of the late speaker of the US House of Representatives Thomas 'Tip' O'Neill. In outlining the achievements and honours bestowed on Mrs O'Neill throughout her long and illustrious life, you omitted to mention the honour which both Mrs O'Neill and her husband cherished most.

As a reward for being a life-long lobbyist for Irish affairs in the US Congress, both Tip O'Neill and his wife Mildred were made honorary Irish citizens, which was only the second time such an award had been made. The first recipient was Chester Beatty. - Yours, etc.,

TOM COOPER, Delaford Lawn, Knocklyon, Dublin 16.
