Sir, - Gary Cormican (August 19th), like so many motorists, is under the illusion that by paying road/petrol tax, motorists pay the full cost of being a road user. This is not so. All taxes raised from motoring do not cover the full costs of maintenance and lighting, policing, deaths and injuries, and pollution-related illness such as asthma and bronchitis. Nor do they pay for acid rain, global warming and exploitation of Third World countries. With regard to the building of new roads, most of this money has been begged from other European countries. - Yours, etc., John Devlin,
Erne Terrace,
Baile Atha Cliath 2.
