Madam, - The headline in yesterday's Business section, "Farmers rejoice at failure to get deal in Cancún", is a sad reflection on a system which is supposed to be about "free trade" and level playing-fields. As a result of the collapse of the talks, farmers and growers in the Third World will continue to struggle to sell their goods at competitive prices while US and EU farmers can set aside land and still get paid.

The fact that farmers' groups in this country rejoice just shows how much in a rut the whole process is. - Yours, etc.,
