Madam, - I agree with Una McCormack's argument against the use of plastic containers for milk. (October 6th). Plastic has become a dangerously abundant pollutant.
Most liquid products could be delivered in returnable bottles. Smashing and remaking perfectly good bottles and jars is, to say the least, very wasteful and expensive. When fruit drinks first came out in non-returnable bottles the argument was that it was too expensive to transport the bottles back to the factories. Why not transport the drinks in bulk and bottle locally?
We in the North still have milk delivered to the door in glass returnable bottles, and I am willing to pay more for this service. However, your correspondent's blue tits might be as disappointed as I am to find that it is no longer possible to get milk with cream on top! Our milk producers took the step some time ago of "standardising" the bottled milk, so that it is the same as the tasteless stuff in the supermarkets. - Yours, etc.,
