Madam, - Lucinda Creighton (August 26th) refers to the "godfathers in the trade union movement". Bit strong that, wasn't it?
She has a major argument with benchmarking. She says the country can't afford it and it's time to toss it overboard.
Isn't Ms Creighton a young blood in the dying Fine Gael party? Doesn't she know the the elected members of the Dáil were the first "workers" to receive the benchmarking award? And that no one has returned it?
Hand in hand with the money goes the idea of increased productivity. There's a lot of room for increased productivity in Fine Gael, isn't there?
Some of the worst-paid workers in the country are public servants and Ms Creighton would begrudge them a decent catch-up rise. Would this be Fine Gael policy by any chance? - Yours, etc.,
KATHRYN MULREADY, Calderwood Road, Dublin 9.
