Sir, – Good luck to the authorities with the enforcement of the smoking ban in cars. It may even emulate the successful enforcement of the Road Traffic Act, which has brought the uninsured down to a mere 100,000. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Despite being a life-long anti-smoker, I am appalled at the suggestion that smoking in cars be legally banned on the pretext of the State protecting the health of our children.
What’s next? Banning the over-feeding and under-exercising of children? Enforcing inoculation programmes? Banning PlayStation use? Installing “virtuous living” meters in every household, with fines for those who do not conform to the ideals of perfect behaviour?
Has the Government spotted a gap in the personal morality market now the Catholic Church has left a pedestal free on the moral high ground?
Would the good Dr Reilly please just ban queuing in A&Es? – Yours, etc,
MICHAEL SINNOTT,
