Madam, - I read in your edition of November 18th that the Minister for the Environment has commissioned a county-by-county study to identify sub-standard roads around the State. As if this wasn't laughable enough, it got even better: the Minister proclaimed that the Government had "broken the back of the age-old problem of poor quality in the quieter county and regional roads".

Well, I don't know what it's like on whatever planet the Minister inhabits, but I can assure him the only back likely to be broken on my local roads is the back axle of my car as I drop into yet another Kildare pothole! - Yours, etc.,
