Affluent enough to own a car, yet unable to stomach fuel prices

We should not be catering to this vocal subset of the population

Sir, – In a cost-of-living crisis, the State must not subsidise fossil fuels. Rather than slashing fuel taxes to temporarily appease protesters, it would be far more prudent to allocate those funds to expanding and improving public transport, cycling and EV infrastructure.

What this nation needs is viable alternatives to private petrol and diesel transport, not a veiled wealth transfer from those who do not own polluting vehicles to those who do.

If alleviating the current cost-of-living crisis is the goal, then it should be done by assisting all citizens through universal measures such as electricity bills or grocery VAT supports, rather than catering to a vocal subset of the population that is both affluent enough to own a car yet unable to stomach today’s price at the pump. – Yours, etc,

MICHAEL MAKARENKO,
