Zimbabwe opposition leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai, arrested after a week of protests against the government, was held in police custody on Saturday after a court hearing for a newly recorded treason charge was postponed until Monday, his lawyers said.

Tsvangirai was arrested at his home and taken to a police station in central Harare on yesterday, the last day of mass anti-government protests, an official with his Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party, had said.

51-year-old Tsvangirai has been charged with treason for "organising and holding rallies urging his supporters to take to the streets to overthrow President Robert Mugabe."

The European Union and the United States have denounced the arrest.
