A disgruntled Tiger Woods growled after being put off by a whistling spectator as he played his second shot in the U.S. Open third round today.
The defending champion, who moved into contention with a four-under-par 66 yesterday, had hit a perfect drive at the 576-yard opening hole but then pushed his approach into the right front bunker as the spectator intervened.
World number one Woods, four under for the tournament at the start of his round, splashed out to 15 feet but was unable to sink the birdie putt and had to settle for a par five.
Before teeing off, twice major champion Vijay Singh and Jim Furyk were joined at the top of the leaderboard on seven-under by Nick Price.
The Zimbabwean veteran birdied his three opening holes while playing alongside another legend Tom Watson, who was three-under through three.
Darren Clarke got to three under through seven and was just four shots off the pace. The big Ulsterman carded four birdies and two bogeys in what has been a mixed start.
Padraig Harrington was one over for his round with four to play, leaving the Dubliner on the wrong side of par at two over.
