A woman was shot and seriously injured by a police marksman in Britain last night.
The 31-year-old, thought to be the first British woman to be deliberately shot by an armed officer, was hit after police were called to a street in Kirknewton, West Lothian, Lothian and Borders Police said.
She was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where she is understood to be in a serious but stable condition.
It is understood armed police were called to the area at about 5pm after the woman was seen brandishing a gun outside her home.
The shooting is understood to have happened at about 7pm, following repeated requests to put the weapon down.
No-one else was involved in the incident, police confirmed.
A police spokesman said: "The full post firearms incident procedure has been established and a senior independent officer from another police force will be appointed to oversee the investigation into the circumstances of the shooting.
"As a full, independent inquiry will take place it would be inappropriate to comment further."
A spokeswoman for the hospital confirmed that a woman had been admitted to Accident and Emergency following the incident, but declined to comment further.
