AN ALLEGED rape victim denied yesterday that she had invented the rape story because she was afraid her boyfriend would hear she had agreed to have sex with the defendant.

The 38 year old Co Antrim woman claims that she was raped once by the defendant and that later he had sexually abused her with a stick and raped her again.

The 25 year old defendant denies charges of rape and indecent assault, allegedly committed in the early hours of July 1st, 1994.

The woman admitted that in her first statement to police she had only given a detailed description of the first rape.

She told the jury she had been crying and was very shaken, and had remembered nothing about the second incident until two days afterwards.

Mr Tony Cinnamond QC, appearing for the defendant suggested the woman had been anxious to "get her hands on some money" and had told lies about what happened in order to get money.

During cross examination, she agreed that she had made a claim for criminal injuries but had not made up any story.

The jury has been told that, when interviewed, the defendant told police he had had sex with the woman but it had been with her consent.
