Waterford Institute of Technology is to develop a large-scale student village that will accommodate more than 1,000 students at a site on the outskirts of Waterford city.
The third-level college is seeking planning permission from Waterford County Council for a development to include 12 blocks containing a total of 204 accommodation units consisting of 110 four-bed and 94 six-bed units.
The scheme will provide secure on-campus accommodation for 1,004 students.
The application also provides for a site-specific waste treatment plant, an enclosed bicycle store, and a car-park with 400 spaces.
The development would be accessed from a new entrance off the Old Kilmeaden Road.
Prof Kieran R. Byrne, director of Waterford Institute of Technology, said the development represented a "major forward step in the realisation of the goals set out in the strategic plan presented to the Minister for Education and Science, Mr Dempsey, earlier in the year.
"This will be a significant development that will be accompanied by other physical infrastructure developments on the same site in the near future."
Prof Byrne said Waterford Institute of Technology had more students this year than ever before and wanted to ensure the best kind of accommodation in a carefully managed environment that is strategically led.
