Water restrictions may be "unavoidable" in Dublin during the summer months if demand increases, householders and businesses have been warned.

Dublin City Council appealed to the public and the business community to conserve water and to minimise usage.

The council said lower than average rainfall in recent months had led to a reduction in the volume of raw water available for treatment from the reservoirs at Poulaphouca, Roundwood and Bohernabreena.

"While there is no immediate need to impose restrictions on water supply, restrictions may however be unavoidable should the dry spell continue and should demand for water increase during the summer period," the council said on its website.

Reduced rainfall in March and April resulted in a "very dry catchment area", according to the council.

Although normal rainfall occurred in May this rain was "generally absorbed into the ground" resulting in very little run-off into the water reservoirs. This in turn led to a reduction in the amount of raw water available for treatment and public use.
