It is believed that hardline members are furious at disciplinary measures meted out to rebel Assembly members Mr Peter Weir and Ms Pauline Armitage for voting against the party.

Mr Weir was expelled from the party and Ms Armitage suspended for voting against the re-election of Mr David Trimble as First Minister of the power-sharing executive.

Anti-agreement members also want the party leader to agree an exit strategy from the devolved executive if there are not further moves on disarmament by the IRA.

They expect total decommissioning to have been completed by February when the remit of the International Independent Commission on Decommissioning expires.

Ms Armitage said she did not know who was behind the calling of the council but that Mr Trimble should be worried about the outcome.

"I have had many many letters from associations and branches supporting what Peter Weir and I have done and who are disappointed with the disciplinary action that was taken against us," she said.
