Meanwhile in a separate incident a US soldier was killed and three were wounded today when a roadside bomb was detonated as their convoy drove past near a town west of Baghdad, the US army said.

In a statement, it said the convoy was attacked northeast of the flashpoint town of Falluja, in the volatile "Sunni triangle" region where much of the resistance to occupying troops has been concentrated.

Today's attacks brings to 212 the number of US troops killed in action since Washington declared major combat over on May 1st.
