IRAQ: A US soldier was killed and another wounded yesterday when their convoy was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade and small-arms fire north-west of Baghdad, the US military said in a statement.
The soldiers were from the 3rd Armoured Cavalry Regiment.
The attack happened around 9 a.m. local time in an area populated mainly by minority Sunni Muslims, from among whom Saddam Hussein once drew much of his support.
In a separate incident, the International Committee of the Red Cross said a staff member was killed and one of its drivers wounded in a shooting south of Baghdad yesterday.
Meanwhile, a delegation from Iraq's new US-appointed Governing Council will present its case to the UN Security Council on Tuesday.
A source in Baghdad said that the Governing Council would ask for international recognition. - (Reuters)
