A United Nations policeman in Kosovo was shot dead when his vehicle came under fire in the north of the province, a spokesman for the UN mission said this afternoon.
The incident took place late yesterday on the road towards the town of Leposavic, the spokesman said, adding he could not reveal the nationality of the officer.
He said the UN police vehicle was apparently forced to slow down because of stones lying on the road. "That's when the shooting started," the spokesman said, giving no further details.
Kosovo was placed under UN-led administration in the summer of 1999 after NATO's 11-week bombing campaign to halt Serbian repression of the province's Albanian majority.
