A UN official said gunfire from Israel hit a UN water truck on the Lebanese side of the border today , heightening border tensions a day after Israeli planes bombed inside Syria.
"A UNIFIL water truck was hit by three bullets from the Israeli side," said the official from the UN's peacekeeping force UNIFIL. "All our trucks are clearly marked," he said. He said no one was hurt but gave no other details.
Israel denied that its forces attacked targets in southern Lebanon, and Lebanese Hizbollah guerrillas said they were not involved in any "shooting incident" on the border.
But a Lebanese security source said shots were fired from Israel over the border into Lebanon.
"The Israelis fired in the air over Lebanese cars on the road between Kfar Kila and Adayseh with the excuse that they came under fire from our side," the security source said.
"But no one fired from our side and there are no injuries on our side," he added.
In a separate incident, Lebanese security sources said Israeli troops in the disputed Shebaa Farms border area fired shells close to a south Lebanese village. There were no reports of injuries or damage.
In Jerusalem, an army spokesman said: "The army did not attack any targets in Lebanon."
