British retail sales growth in May returned to trend after April's surge, which was boosted by the timing of Easter as well the spell of good weather, according to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI).

In its latest distributive trades survey, CBI said annual retail sales growth has now reverted to the trend reported since January.

It said the net balance of retailers reporting increased sales volumes in May fell to plus 25 from plus 57 in April.

"Growth expectations for June remain consistent with the past three surveys, indicating a reasonably robust rate of expansion but not a return to boom conditions," the CBI reported.
