The first fatality occurred at The Bridge, Bunclody, Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, at 9 p.m. on Sunday when a man in his 50s was hit by a car. Gardai in Gorey later named the man killed as Mr Patrick Somers Snr, (51) from Carrigban, Bunclody.

A second fatality occurred yesterday at 4.45 a.m. in Demesne, Portumna, Co Galway, when a man in his 40s was struck by a van and killed.

In another accident, four people were brought to hospital following a pile up on the main Galway-Headford road early yesterday morning in heavy fog.

So far this year 267 people have been killed in road accidents in the Republic, 44 fewer than in the same period last year.

In all, 45 pedestrians have been killed on the roads in 2003.
