Two men were tonight charged at a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court in Dublin in connection with the discovery of explosives and a large quantity of ammunition in Sligo on Saturday.

Mr Wayne Kelly (23), of Cranmore Villas, Cranmore, Sligo was charged with the unlawful possession of an explosive substance - 21 kilogrammes of ammonium nitrate and icing sugar- at his home on Saturday.

Mr Gerard Mooney (38), of St Anne's Terrace, Sligo was charged with the unlawful possession of 5,060 rounds of assorted ammunition at his home on Saturday.

Mr Mooney was also charged with membership of an unlawful organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Oglaigh na hEireann, otherwise the IRA on September 6th.

Sergeant Conall Lee, Sligo, gave evidence of arresting Mr Kelly at his home at 2.38 p.m. on Saturday under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act. Sgt Lee said that Mr Kelly was released from that arrest at 2.15 pm yesterday and rearrested for charging at the Special Criminal Court.

Detective Sergeant James Fox, Sligo , gave evidence of arresting Mr Mooney at his home at 4.44 p.m. on Saturday. He said that Mr Mooney was released from that arrest at 2.40 p.m. today and rearrested for charging at the court.

The court remanded both men in custody until Friday when bail applications are expected to be made on their behalf.
