Ulster Unionist leader Mr David Trimble has called off a planned meeting of the party's 900-member ruling council on the peace process tomorrow night.
Mr Trimble announced the cancellation after a meeting last night with the party's 13-strong officer board.
Ulster Unionist chairman Mr James Cooper said the party was going to proceed with its election campaign and place the onus on republicans to live up to their commitments under the Belfast Agreement.
The Assembly elections are set to proceed on November 26th depsite the failure of Mr Trimble to reach a deal with Sinn Féin last week.
The Ulster Unionist had the largest number of seats in 1998 but this time is facing a fierce battle for supremacy from the Rev Ian Paisley's Democratic Unionists.
The DUP were due to launch an attack today on their pro-Belfast Agreement rivals about rate increases and water charges if the British government sticks with its current formula for devolution.
