The Ulster Unionist leader Mr David Trimble has called for the scrapping of the Parades Commission in order to "avoid bitterconfrontations at flashpoint marches.
Mr Trimble urged the British government to get rid of the body now rather than wait for another two years.
The Commission was set up to adjudicate on parades or processions such as the such as the controversial Orange Order Drumcree parade in Portadown, Co Armagh.
Mr Trimble said: "It is now firmly established that the Parades Commission must be removed and replaced with a fair and impartial rights based determining body."
With the volatile loyalist marching season now underway, the Upper Bann MP demanded immediate action as his party issued its response to a major examination of the commission's operations.
The review was carried out by former Ulster Bank chief Sir George Quigley as part of a deal agreed by the Government and pro-Belfast Agreement parties.
Unionists have been infuriated by a series of decisions made by the Commission which placed restrictions on contentious marches.
Sir George's study recommended it should be replaced by two separate bodies.
The report has gone out to public consultation, but the UUP's verdict claimed it should have recommended more efforts to deal with parade disputes regarded asimpossible to resolve.
All assessments given by the police service should be given to parade organisers, the party added.
Mr Trimble backed the finding that the commission should be replaced with twobodies with separate mediation and arbitration roles.
"Solving once and for all the problematic issues surrounding certain parades is in everyone's interests and every bit as important as reaching a satisfactorypolitical settlement," he said.
"Bouncing from summer to summer with the potential for community confrontation simply cannot go on.
"This is something I believe must be a priority of the Government, as holding back until the Northern Ireland Office of 2005/2006 serves no useful purpose."
A spokesman for the Commission tonight declined to comment, other than to say: "It's a matter for the NIO."
