Kathmandu - Three policemen were killed in a clash with Maoist rebels who launched attacks in Nepal which have claimed at least 46 lives in the past two days, it was reported yesterday.

The three were killed in the Sunsari district, 186 miles south-east of the capital, in a shoot-out with the rebels late on Saturday. Police and rebels also clashed on Saturday in Ilam district, 243 miles north-east of Kathmandu, but there were no reports of casualties.

Six others were killed on Saturday in a rebel ambush in the south-western Surkhet district. And 40 policemen, soldiers and civilians were killed in other attacks on Friday when the rebels unilaterally broke a July ceasefire.
