Supermarket giant Tesco is to add more than 270 full-time new jobs to its workforce in the Cork region as part of a new development programme.

Over the next 18 months, 120 extra staff will be hired for new store at Wilton Shopping Centre, which is expected to open in November.

The rest of the jobs will be based at a new store in the southside of the city that is expected to open in 2005.

The company already employs about 10,000 staff across in 80 outlets in Ireland. The company said that the new jobs are in addition to the 330 new jobs previously announced for the region.

Last week the company said it would create 60 new jobs by extending 24-hour opening to an additional four outlets. Shopping 24-hours is now available in Dublin at Artane; at Bray, Co Wicklow; and at Maynooth and Newbridge in Co Kildare.
