A Swedish national in his 30s was on a life-support machine last night following a suspected assault early yesterday during a festival in New Ross, Co Wexford.

Gardaí were called to the scene of a dispute outside a pub in Mary Street in New Ross at 1 a.m. yesterday.

The man was brought to Wexford General Hospital and was yesterday in a critical condition in the intensive care unit.

A follow-up investigation began immediately, with gardaí interviewing a number of other Scandinavian visitors and local witnesses.

New Ross was crowded throughout the weekend for the JFK Dunbrody Festival, with free concerts on the town's streets drawing visitors from across the south-east and beyond.

In Dublin a 21-year-old man remained in critical condition last night after receiving a stab wound in an incident at Barry Avenue, Finglas.

The stabbing took place at 9.45 p.m. on Friday. The injured man was removed to Blanchardstown Hospital. No arrests have been made.

Meanwhile, a man in his late 20s was attacked by a group of men at a house at Lisduggan on Paddy Brown's Road in Waterford city at 1.40 a.m. yesterday.

He was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital. Gardaí are investigating the incident. The man's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
