Garda in Wexford are investigating the latest in a series of anthrax-type scares at an information services company.

Employees of Equifax, a subsidiary of a UK information services company, received a suspect envelope at their premises in the Whitemill Industrial Estate, Wexford at 9.45 a.m. yesterday.

The envelope was not opened but the Garda were called immediately when a powder substance was noticed.

Wexford fire services and gardaí attended the scene before alerting the bomb disposal unit at Collins Barracks in Cork.

An Explosive Ordnance Disposal officer arrived at 2.30 p.m and examined the envelope which he found to contain a suspect powder. He sealed it in a container and handed it over to gardaí who took it to Dublin for technical examination.

An army spokesman confirmed the envelope contained a powder, but it was not being classified as "high-risk". "This company has been the subject of a number of anthrax-types hoaxes both here and in the UK" he said.

Wexford Garda also reported that Equifax had received "a number of suspect packages" within the past year.

The company said last night that it was "working closely with the gardaí" regarding the incident.

"Equifax takes the matter of staff safety and security very seriously and applies stringent security procedures throughout all its sites including the provision of appropriate safety equipment for handling incoming post and packages" it said in a statement.
