A suspicious car has been blown up in a controlled explosion by west London police.

The incident closed one Tube station and delayed the start of a Premiership football match.

Shortly after 6.30pm, police responded to reports of a suspicious car parked in South Africa Road, near White City Underground station.

The area was cordoned off, Wood Lane was closed to traffic in both directions and the station was shut.

Scotland Yard said officers carried out a controlled explosion and the all clear was given shortly before 8pm.

Police said the kick-off in the clash between Fulham and Newcastle United at the nearby Loftus Road stadium had to be delayed by half-an-hour due to the late arrival of crowds because of the incident.
