THE National Women's Council of Ireland has welcomed the cross party support for action which will freeze the assets of those suspected of major drugs related crimes.
The NWCI chief executive, Ms Anne Marie Gill, said the organisation shared in the national grief at the murder of Veronica Guerin and the public anger at political ineptitude in tackling serious crime.
"We believe that the response must be to bring those responsible for Veronica's death to justice and to cut off the hiding places and financial lifelines of those involved. Veronica Guerin exposed the reality of crime in Ireland and it is imperative that we create an environment where it is impossible for criminals to operate", she said.
The NWCI favours a Commission on Crime aimed at supporting the Garda Siochana the courts and all the relevant agencies in building an effective response.
"As an organisation committed to achieving rights for women we are acutely aware that such rights are not always easily protected and that effective mechanisms must be in place if we are to get the balance right," Ms Gill said.
She criticised lack of political action and ambivalence towards, a comprehensive approach to crime.
