Dozens of shops and businesses were closed in Dublin yesterday after a fire broke out an ESB sub-station.

Shopkeepers were forced to draw down their shutters when power cuts hit the Grafton Street/Nassau Street area.

A spokesman for the Electricity Supply Board said about 200 of its customers were affected. Some had been reconnected by lunchtime, while the remainder had power restored before 4pm, he said.

The fire, which broke out shortly before 10am, had been caused by damage to an internal cable in a sub-station on the grounds of Trinity College Dublin, just off Nassau Street.

Banks, pubs and retail outlets on Suffolk Street, Dawson Street, Grafton Street and Nassau Street were among the premises closed by the power cuts.

Other premises in the area remained open as they were connected to a different substation.

The ESB spokesman said it did not expect any further disruption as it sought to restore the affected sub-station to full working order, "but if there is ,we will schedule it and contact customers in advance", he said.
