Surface water near a children's playground in Waterford's municipal park contains traces of escherichia coli (E.coli) bacteria.Carol Duffy reports.
Waterford City Council says the frequently flooded area of the park will be drained and relandscaped as part of the second phase of redevelopment works in the People's Park.
It is believed that old culverts have become blocked and that the e.coli has built up in stagnant water.
Mr Eddie Ruane, a council spokesman, said: "We are about to enter into the second phase of the improvement works at the People's Park, which will mean dealing with the surface water problem by addressing the drainage. We will be securing the area at the northern end of the park, so it will be protected."
He added: "The presence of e.coli wouldn't be beyond the range of possibilities in surface water that has lain untouched, but it is not a major concern."
Senator Maurice Cummins (FG) is calling for a barrier to be placed around the affected area of the park before remedial works are carried out. "Over the weekend I was contacted by a number of people complaining about the terrible smell coming from the water," he said.
