St Patrick's Athletic were gifted their first league win in two months courtesy of an unfortunate late own goal from Waterford United defender Ger McLoughlin last night.

The only goal of the night came in the second minute of injury time when a cross from the right flank fell into the stride of McLoughlin who could only watch as the ball veered towards his own net.

Mark Clifford didn't do Waterford any favours when he made a poorly timed tackle on St Pat's Mark Donnelly after 37 minutes. His efforts earned Clifford a red card for recklessness from referee Damien Hancock.

The win sees St Pat's move above their Dublin rivals Shamrock Rovers to fourth in the league.

Elsewhere, Drogheda United scored their first home goal in six matches to secure a vital point against Derry City at 02 Park.

The two teams, fighting to avoid the promotion/relegation semi final play-offs, played out a 1-1 draw after a second half penalty from Drogheda's Andy Myler cancelled out Sean Friars opener for Derry.

The result prevents Derry over-taking Drogheda in the league, a welcome boost for Drogheda who had lost five of their last six home league games.

Meanwhile, Longford Town's match with Shelbourne was abandoned after 59 minutes due to water-logging.
