Blackburn manager Graeme Souness could be tempted into a move for Frank de Boer after the Dutch international was released by Barcelona today.
Souness, already close to clinching a deal for Rangers' Italian defender Lorenzo Amoruso, has also been following de Boer's situation.
He told the BBC Sport online: "Frank de Boer is one of several players we are currently looking at and it is something we are weighing up at the moment."
The former Ajax defender had already received offers from unnamed Premiership clubs before getting today's news that he was surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp.
With new president Joan Laporta reshaping the club in his image following his election last week, De Boer and coach Raddy Antic have been told they can leave.
Antic stepped into the breach after Louis van Gaal was asked to leave but his short-term contract has not been renewed, with De Boer's former Ajax team-mate Frank Rijkaard expected to take over.
"I believe I have two or three years at the top level and I am thinking of England and Holland next. I will go on holiday and then we will see," de Boer said.
"(Barca director) Javier Perez Farguell, Louis van Gaal and the former staff promised me that if I played a number of games, I would continue but that has not been the case.
"The new people have a different philosophy and they do not want me to continue. I am angry with Perez Farguell because of that."
De Boer joined Barcelona in 1998 from Ajax where he won the 1995 Champions League, then returned to Amsterdam for a season, before going back to Catalonia and establishing himself at the Nou Camp.
Souness is also hoping to wrap up a move for Millwall's Republic of Ireland winger Steven Reid and still expects David Dunn to complete his protracted Stg£5.5m move to Birmingham.
He added: "We have made an offer for Steven Reid which is on the Millwall chairman's desk.
"We think it is a very fair bid and what happens next is up to them. And with David Dunn, negotiations with Birmingham are continuing, and we are very hopeful that the two clubs can reach an agreement on that one."
