Santiago - Leading socialists could be targeted by rightwing assassins if the former dictator, Gen Augusto Pinochet, dies in Britain or Spain, a newspaper reported yesterday, quoting Chilean government contingency plans.
Government and military analysts believe that Gen Pinochet's health is so weak that it is likely that he will die before returning to Chile, the daily La Tercera de Santiago reported. If that happens government contingency plans include assigning extra security to socialist and leading leftwing politicians as well as outside the British and Spanish embassies to handle likely rioting.
