BRITAIN shivered and slid in the grip of severe weather last night as snow and high winds caused misery for thousands. The blizzards led to some towns being cut off and left thousands without electricity.
Winds gusting up to 60 mph led to snow drifts, some of up to five or six feet.

Many routes were blocked by snowdrifts. The worst hit areas were East Anglia and the South East. The RAC said conditions were appalling".
