Dhaka - Bangladesh's former prime minister, Begum Khaleda Zia, has asked the government to resettle slum dwellers evicted from Dhaka to the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

Officials yesterday termed the proposal "politically motivated and intended to reopen old wounds".

The High Court on Monday approved a government plan to demolish slums in the overcrowded capital. The Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, ordered the eviction, saying the slums threatened the environment and sheltered criminals.
