Management and unions at Belfast aerospace company Shorts will have further talks today in an attempt to break the deadlock in a long-running industrial dispute.

The two sides agreed to proposals put forward by the Labour Relations Agency earlier this week to allow the talks proceed.

The issue concerns a threat to more than more than 1,000 jobs following the decision by staff in two of the three unions to reject a proposed four-year pay agreement.

Industrial action was suspended for six weeks while the company has agreed to suspend controversial new working arrangements over the same period.

Today's discussions are expected to lead to more intensive talks next week.

Shorts' parent company, Bombardier, is seeking to reduce its workforce in Northern Ireland to improve competitiveness.

More than 580 redundancies have already been announced.
