Alan Shearer scored twice as Newcastle United recovered superbly from two goals down to beat Fulham at Loftus Road tonight.

The former England striker struck a 51st-minute penalty and then rammed in the winner from close range five minutes later in a match delayed by half-an-hour due to a security scare outside the west London stadium before kickoff.

Fulham, who would have gone fourth with a draw, raced into a 2-0 led with goals by Lee Clark and French striker Louis Saha in the first eight minutes.

Newcastle's Laurent Robert halved the arrears after 16 minutes.

The result lifted Newcastle's tally to 12 points, taking them up to ninth in the premier league table. It was their third successive league win after they failed to win any of their opening six league matches of the season.

Fulham, who had not lost in the league since the second match, stay fifth on 15 points, eight behind leaders Arsenal.
