An air and sea search was under way in Northern Ireland tonight after reports that a fisherman has gone missing.

An air and sea search was under way in Northern Ireland tonight after reports that a fisherman has gone missing.

The man was seen fishing on a small dinghy on Upper Lough Erne in Co Fermanagh this afternoon.

The small boat was spotted floating with no one on board at around 3.15 p.m.

The man's rod and personal belongings were found on the vessel which was picked up 90 minutes later. An Irish Coastguard from Sligo, which was involved in the search, has since been relieved by a helicopter from Dublin.

Lough Erne lifeboats are also involved in the search. A Coastguard spokesman said the missing man's identity was not yet known and he appealed for anyone with information to contact them.

Meanwhile, four crew members were rescued from fishing a boat off the Co Cork coast after it caught fire. Earlier, a fisherman was rescued from the water in Smerwick harbour, Co Kerry, after his boat sank.
