Saudi Arabia said today it has arrested a group of militants planning "terrorist attacks" and had seized large amounts of weapons and explosives.
"A terrorist cell of 16 people was uncovered and arrested. Security forces were able to foil a terrorist plot planned against vital Saudi installations and targets," Saudi television reported, quoting an interior ministry official.
Television footage showed arms - including rocket-propelled grenades, ammunition and large amounts of chemicals.
Saudi Arabia, the birth place of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, stepped up a crackdown on Islamic militants in May when three bombings in Riyadh killed 35 people, including nine Americans.
