RTÉ television presenter Mr Duncan Stewart is reported to be in a stable condition in hospital in Belarus today after he was injured while filming on Monday evening.

Members of his family were due to travel to Belarus this morning to be with him.

The presenter, whose shows include Eco Eyeand About The House, had travelled to Belarus with a party from Ms Adi Roche's Chernobyl Children's Project. He was also shooting footage for a proposed programme on nuclear energy.

Mr Steward was filming when he was involved in a fall at Bragin, south east Belarus. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he remained last night.

A spokesman for the Chernobyl Children's Project said it had had limited contact with the party since the accident because the telephone service in the area is so poor. He said the circumstances surrounding the fall and precise nature of Mr Stewart's injuries are unknown.
