FATAL accidents on the roads over the May hank holiday weekend were more than double those last year, according to statistics issued yesterday by the Garda.
Eleven people were killed between May 1st and May 5th, 1997, and 121 were injured. This compares with five people killed and 123 injured in the corresponding period of 1996.
The Garda has also issued figures showing that in March, 45 people were killed in road traffic accidents and 840 were injured. In March 1996, 33 people were killed and 720 were injured.
During April, 30 people were killed and 801 were injured. In the corresponding period of last year, 33 people were killed and 828 injured.
For the year to date, there" have been 132 fatal road accidents and 3,102 injuries. In the corresponding period of 1996, there were 122 deaths and 3,123 injuries.
