A KILDARE doorman convicted earlier this year of raping a young man in a laneway at the town courthouse faces a sentence of at least five years, Mr Justice Moriarty said yesterday.
Defence counsel Mr Michael McMahon SC said his client, Philip Sullivan, was undergoing therapy in Wheatfield Prison, where he is serving an unrelated four year sentence for sexual assault imposed by Naas Circuit Court.
The court was told the Naas case involved an eight year old boy. Sullivan was sentenced for four counts of sexual assault and 12 more were taken into consideration. Yesterday Mr McMahon asked that the rape case sentence be adjourned by the Central Criminal Court to see how Sullivan was progressing. His client wished to apologise.
In January, a jury unanimously convicted Sullivan (33), of Lourdesville, Kildare, of the laneway rape following a three day trial.
Mr Justice Moriarty said he was extremely pleased to read in the victim impact report that the injured party was doing "significantly well". Commending the 23 year old victim, the judge advised him to try to put the experience behind him.
The judge remanded Sullivan in custody to October 6th.
