A teenage sex attack victim tried to wave down passing motorists on the streets of Derry as she cried out for help, it has emerged today.

Although the 17-year-old fled her attacker, detectives believe she could have wandered the city's streets for up to six hours before she managed to contact the authorities.

Police found the young woman after she made an emergency telephone call to their officers.

The call was made from a payphone in Bishop's Street, about 500 yards from the Strand Road bar where the 17-year-old had been earlier that evening.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "The allegations she is making are of a degrading sexual assault".

The young woman is 5ft 5ins, slim and has dark shoulder-length hair. She was wearing a grey cardigan, a black t-shirt, blue jeans and black boots.

Police are now trying to trace the victim's movements and are appealing for the public to help.
