A Co Monaghan postal worker appeared in court yesterday charged with stealing more than £63,850 from Castleblayney Post Office, where he was employed.

Mr John Murphy (44), of Ashview Court, Castleblayney, appeared at Castleblayney District Court on charges of stealing the cash on February 13th and handling it on February 14th, knowing the money to have been stolen, contrary to the Larceny Act.

The court heard the cash was taken from Castleblayney lasts Thursday and Mr Murphy was arrested by gardai in Dublin the following day. Garda Sgt Eric Boyle told Judge Flann Brennan it was feared the accused would abscond if released on bail.

He said they were unable to obtain the accused's passport. Mr Murphy told the judge he had mislaid his passport and could not find it.
