The PSNI have not yet established a motive behind an overnight gun attack that injured a 48-year-old man in loyalist east Belfast last night. Some media reports have connected the attack with loyalist paramilitaries.

The man was seriously injured when he was shot a number of times in an attack on his home in Dundonald.

Three masked men forced their way into a house in Campsie Park in the loyalist Ballybeen Estate shortly after 10 p.m.

They shot the man a number of times before fleeing in a car. The victim's wife was at the house but escaped injury.

There are fears that the shooting may be linked to a feud between rival loyalist paramilitary gangs.

A PSNI spokeswoman said the police were aware of reports that the attack was being linked to loyalists but said they were "keeping an open mind".

Progressive Unionist Party leader, Mr David Ervine, said he did not believe the shooting was related to any feud within loyalism.

Mr Ervine condemned the attack saying people should turn to the police rather than paramilitaries.

The man underwent emergency surgery at the Ulster Hospital and a spokeswoman today described his condition as stable.

Police later found a burned out car in the Brookland Gardens area and have appealed for information.
