Just 56 players were left in the Volvo Masters as it started its delayed second round at Valderrama today. Denmark's Soren Hansen, joint 25th after an opening 74, withdrew before teeing off again because of a fever.
No play was possible yesterday because of heavy rain and strong winds, but although it was still blustery there was sunshine for this morning's resumption.
To try to make up for lost time the field were put into threes rather than twos and started at both the first and 10th holes. The same groups were also going to play together in the afternoon's third round, although it was expected that it would still be impossible to finish before nightfall.
Swede Fredrik Jacobson led at eight under par, his brilliant 64 on Thursday putting him two ahead of Anders Hansen - no relation to Soren - and four strokes clear of Spaniard Carlos Rodiles.
Nick Faldo, first winner of the title on the course back in 1988, was in the first group to tee off on the back nine and his birdie three took him to one over and joint 18th spot. Faldo also birdied the long 11th and moved into a tie for 14th at level par.
Best of the Irish after the first round was Tour rookie Peter Lawrie after a level par round but the Dubliner dropped a shot at the first hole. Paul McGinley and Gary Murphy are a stroke further back while Darren Clarke (+4) and Padraig Harrington (+6) are well off the pace.
