Gardaí have named the Romanian woman who was found stabbed to death in the Phoenix Park earlier this month.

She was Eugenia Bratis (50), from Timisoara. She had two children, both of whom are in their 20s and living in Romania.

Two passersby discovered her in the Military Road area of the park on the afternoon of August 5th.

A postmortem examination revealed she had died as a result of internal trauma caused by multiple stab wounds to her upper body.

Despite an extensive public appeal both in Ireland and internationally through Interpol, the woman's body was not identified until last week after gardaí released photographs of her.

A liaison with the Romanian community in Ireland saw the photographs, recognised the woman and contacted the authorities.

Her family was contacted in Romania on Thursday and DNA samples from the family were sent to the Garda forensic science laboratory in the Phoenix Park.

A Garda spokesman today appealed for help in tracing the woman’s movements before she was killed.

He said detectives have established that she had visited Ireland several times since 2007. In recent months she had been seen begging in Dublin city centre, mainly on O'Connell Bridge and O'Connell Street.
