DR Conor Cruise O'Brien, the writer and politician, was in a stable condition in Dublin's. Beaumont Hospital last night, after suffering a mild stroke.
Dr O'Brien (78) was admitted to hospital shortly after 9 a.m. yesterday. A hospital spokeswoman said further tests will be carried out today. He is expected to remain in hospital for several days. Dr O'Brien's family members could not be, contacted last night.
Dr O'Brien, a former government minister, has been taking part in the Northern Ireland, talks and forum on behalf of the UK Unionist Party led by Mr Robert McCartney.
While canvassing during the election campaign, Dr O'Brien said he was proud to be associated with a party which was uncompromisingly unionist but non sectarian. He also canvassed for Mr McCartney in last year's North Down by election.
